- This thesis explores the design and enhancement of ship recycling facilities, focusing on the integration of risk management and productivity improvement. The study aims to address the complex challenges faced by the ship recycling industry, particularly in developing countries like Indonesia, where environmental sustainability and worker safety are often compromised. The research begins with a thorough investigation of the hazards associated with ship recycling activities. Extensive field studies, workshops with industry experts, and best practice guidelines were employed to identify and categorize these hazards. This foundational work provided the basis for a comprehensive analysis of health, safety, and environmental (HSE) risks, incorporating detailed data collection and empirical case studies. A key contribution of this thesis is the development of a robust risk assessment framework tailored specifically for ship recycling yards. This framework integrates established risk assessment methodologies and probability calculations, offering a structured approach to identifying, evaluating, and mitigating risks. Additionally, the thesis introduces the use of Discrete Event Simulation (DES) to optimise productivity and cost in ship recycling operations. By utilising ARENA software, the research provides a detailed cost-benefit analysis of various risk control measures, highlighting opportunities for efficiency improvements. The proposed framework was validated through empirical case studies conducted in Indonesian ship recycling yards. These studies underscored the practical challenges and risks inherent in the ship recycling process, demonstrating the framework's applicability and effectiveness in realworld settings. Furthermore, the research explores the potential for growth and development in the Indonesian ship recycling industry, identifying strategic locations and evaluating economic and regulatory factors. In general, this thesis contributes to the field by presenting an integrated approach to improving safety, environmental sustainability, and economic efficiency in ship recycling. The findings offer valuable insights for policymakers, industry stakeholders, and researchers, paving the way for safer and more sustainable ship recycling practices globally.
