- Abstract
- This PhD thesis explores the relationship between music and media by focussing on the cultural distinctions of British dance culture. Its main questions are the following: what are the changes in value brought about by the supremacy of recording over ‘live’ music? How are media central to the way youth imagine their own and other music-orientated social worlds? How are various media integral to the formation of youth subcultures? What are the principal axes of distinction in discotheque, club and rave culture? These questions are investigated through multiple methods, principally participant observation and a detailed analysis of historical documents, relevant youth media texts and market research. The thesis both draws upon and interrogates Cultural Studies and Media Sociology scholarship to illuminate these research findings. The work on taste and cultural capital of the French sociologist, Pierre Bourdieu, is also employed and appraised. The thesis comes to several key conclusions. British youth cultures have developed their own sub-systems of distinction, their own ‘subcultural capitals’, whose hierarchies relate to age, gender, race and class. The primary medium of music, recording, and the many secondary media which carry or cover music (from flyers and fanzines to prime time television and tabloid front pages) are integral to this cultural and social structure. They both construct community and mark boundaries. The perceived authenticity (or truth) and distinction (or prestige) of the music, the media and the crowd are the main axes of cultural value.
