- Abstract
- Fog computing environments consist of a wide range of heterogeneous devices, from high-end servers to resource-constrained IoT sensors. This heterogeneous nature introduces significant challenges for effective trust management. Resource-constrained devices, particularly IoT devices at the edge of the fog architecture, often lack the computational, storage and energy capacities required for effective trust management. Furthermore, existing trust management approaches in fog computing treat all participating devices as homogeneous entities and assume a single trust management architecture for all devices in the system. This research proposes a trust management delegation protocol that addresses the limitations of resource-constrained devices by enabling them to delegate trust management tasks to more capable nodes in fog computing systems. With this approach, computationally intensive trust management tasks are delegated from limited devices to resource-rich nodes. The protocol also considers the varying capabilities of devices to ensure efficient trust management across diverse environments. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed delegation approach provides an effective solution for these limited devices. The contributions of this doctoral research are composed of identifying key issues affecting trust management in fog computing systems, analysing a set of trust management requirements that consider the diverse capacities of participating devices and the varying relationships between devices in different application scenarios, and developing a trust management delegation protocol that enables offloading trust management tasks to more capable nodes within the fog system.
