Abstract
  • The aim of this study was to test whether the distal end loading in a trans-tibial socket is affected by modifications in the patellar tendon, medial tibial flare and lateral tibial flare areas. The Strathclyde CAD/CAM system was used to design and manufacture six sockets for one patient. Four sockets had modifications in the above mentioned areas, increasing in depth and volume from 0% to 150% of the reference socket modifications. Two additional sockets were designed to be equal in volume but different in proximal shape. This meant that the effect of shape changes on the distal end pressure could be separated from the effect of volume changes. The patellar tendon, medial tibial flare, lateral tibial flare and the distal end of the sockets were instrumented with pressure transducers, incorporated in the socket wall. Series of static and dynamic tests were performed on all six sockets. Static pressures and peak dynamic pressures were selected to base the socket comparisons on. In the static tests, the proximal modifications led to small, but significant decreases in distal end pressure. In the dynamic tests, there was no clear correlation between proximal modifications and distal end pressure.
