Abstract
  • This research is concerned with the sustainability features of traditional dwellings in hot and arid regions of Iran. The vernacular architecture of Iranian desert cities demonstrates an organic type of architecture and urban settlement that is the product of deprived modern facilities and brutal climatic conditions. Many goals which have recently been achieved in sustainable architecture, have been obtained by traditional architecture in various regions of this country long time ago. Thus, this research seeks to evaluate the sustainability criteria inherited within the traditional houses and the degree to which they comply with the dimensions of sustainability through a comparative analysis between vernacular and contemporary dwellings. To fulfill this goal a Building Sustainability Assessment Method (BSAM) has been developed based on the investigations conducted on other worldwide assessment rating systems. The proposed system has been customized according to the conditions of Iran's local context and is employed for the evaluation of case study houses against sustainability indicators. The research is divided into five chapters. The first chapter discusses the introduction, research problems, research aims and objectives and the adopted methodology. The second chapter aims to represents a historical background of the Yazd, as the case study city, and focuses on the characteristics of traditional and contemporary housing types as well as recent demographical features of housing trends in the region. The third chapter is concerned with the development of a Building Sustainability Assessment rating system according to the conditions of Iran and for use in the evaluation of case study houses. In chapter four, two case study dwellings are chosen to be assessed using the proposed BSAM and according to the sustainability dimensions. Finally, major findings and conclusions of the research are presented in chapter five and the recommendations for the future housing designs are proposed in the form of a set of design guidelines relevant sustainability standards.
