Abstract
  • The research investigates the career development of chefs working in high-end kitchens and particularly the formation of identity during an on-going socialisation process. This study explores the socialisation of chefs and implications of becoming a leader, namely the Head Chef, as a persona which is likely to tolerate an elevated proportion of abusive behaviour during its construction and sustained identification in socialisation. In the past, the public has witnessed a vivid portrayal of the nature of hospitality workers through the media and more recently academia alike. Although investigating chefs has become a well-established practise in management and organisational studies, there is a noticeable lack of research in prevailing their career development and socialisation within a hierarchical order in the workplace. This research provides an account of identity formation under extremely regimented conditions. Identification has become a central focus across the social sciences, particularly personal and collective identities as key parts of someone's self-determination. The central idea of the process in which someone forms his or her identity is vital to determine how he or she reacts to, behaves and perceives the world around him or herself. Previous work on identity has long tried to provide theoretically guided empirical research into identity formation. My understanding of identity formation leads me to the assumption that identification and identity formation has no generic theoretical model; however it does provide a strong universal concept to investigate a socio-psychological and sociological phenomenon, encouraging methodological individualism.
