- Abstract
- Plasticised poly(vinyl chloride) is one of the most widely used biomaterials. A critical review has been undertaken of plasticised poly(vinyl chloride) in relation to the collection, storage and delivery of blood and blood components. Following consideration of the classification of whole blood and blood products, an examination is made of the blood response, the composition of plasticised poly(vinyl chloride) polymers and relevant regulatory requirements. A focus of interest in poly(vinyl chloride) biomaterials is plasticiser selection and this is reviewed in terms of the toxicity of polymer formulations, with an emphasis on di (2-ethyl hexyl) phthalate, the principal plasticiser employed. Di (2-ethyl hexyl) phthalate, is considered further with respect to the distribution of the plasticiser and its metabolites in blood and blood components and the influence of plasticised poly(vinyl chloride) on the survival of stored red blood cells. The review is completed by a discussion of containers for blood platelets and the possible development of biomaterials based on novel plasticisers. The review balances criticism of plasticised poly (vinyl chloride) by a presentation of beneficial processing characteristics and relevant properties.
