- Abstract
- This Masters Thesis consist of the original extended short story ‘Visiting Time’ and a critical commentary to accompany the work. ‘Visiting Time’ follows Frankie Henderson who, after being in a devastating car accident, is bed-bound in hospital with broken legs. While the initial focus of the story is on Frankie’s physical health, the focus shifts to Frankie’s reliability, her understanding of time and memory, her relationships with those around her, and her mental health. The narrative covers the first week after Frankie’s hospital admission with frequent contextual flashbacks. In the critical analysis, I examine several novels, short stories, and academic journals and explain how they helped to inform the style and characterisation in the story with particular focus on memory.
