Abstract
  • Polymer based geosynthetics currently used in reinforced soil structures exhibit a salient feature, that is they show a complex time and temperature dependent elasto-visco-plastic strain response under load. To date, most of the designs are based on the assumption that the loads applied to the structure are of a sustained nature. Field conditions, however, often consist of a sustained load (due to self-weight) and transient loads (due to traffic) with the possibility of seismic loads (earthquakes), explosions and other transient or dynamic loadings occurring. Therefore, a sustained load does not fully represent the field situation. This thesis investigates the behaviour of geosynthetic reinforcements under a combination of a sustained load and short-term loading conditions. To simulate the behaviour of reinforcements under such loading conditions, a test apparatus was developed. Test results were analysed using the Isochronous Strain Energy approach and the Recoverable and the Locked-in ISE components for a geosynthetic were identified. Following this the significance of the use of the ISE approach to the design of geosynthetic reinforced soil structures subject to combined loading is assessed.
