- Abstract
- This survey of one of England's most famous composers includes much new information and many fresh details of considerable musicological interest. These were obtained during the writer's research and through his personal approach to many of the individuals involved in Arthur Bliss's career. It is intended that this work form a bridge between the older, general accounts and the definitive work still to be written. This work is divided into four volumes, of which the first deals with Bliss's life and reaction to his music. Volumes 2, 3 and 4 form a complete thematic catalogue of Bliss's musical works, published and unpublished, arranged chronologically by date of composition, each being given a serial number, with the letter B prefixed, for use in citation purposes. Pull details are given of instrumentation, first performance, the location and bibliographical description of manuscripts, printed first editions, critical comment in a bibliography and major recordings. The incipits of every movement are also quoted, as well as important elements in choral and operatic works.
