  • This Thesis traces the development of community library services in the County of Selkirkshire from 1772 to the present day. It includes parish libraries; gentlemen's and other subscription libraries; the libraries of Mechanics' Institutes; Sabbath School and commercial lending libraries; and shows their inter-linking on the progress towards the public burgh and county Library services of to-day.
